The Cape Town Club, 18 Queen Victoria Street, Gardens, Cape Town, South Africa
Founded in 1858 and revived in 2024, the Cape Town Club is an historic members’ club reimagined for a more modern, more inclusive Cape Town.
The Cape Town Club today is both stately and spirited. Tradition meets transformation — with drag brunches, scientific salons, jazz nights and lectures. It’s where modern Cape Town gathers, and where every member belongs.
The Club began in 1858 and found its permanent home in 1898 — a Sir Herbert Baker design, funded by Cecil Rhodes. Once a hub for South Africa’s early powerbrokers, it was where Jan Smuts drafted the 1939 declaration of war. Women were admitted in 1979.
After closing in 2017, the Club returned in 2024 to honour its past while embracing a more inclusive future.
Three venues. Three moods. From laid-back coffee to elevated dining and live performance — experience the full flavour of the Club, all under one roof.
GRAND SALON
Once the Club’s original ballroom, the Grand Salon now hosts everything from festive dinners to casual member lunches. With high ceilings, period details, and roaring winter fireplaces, it’s where grandeur meets everyday ease.
LIBRARY
Lined with historical volumes and artefacts, the Library is a serene retreat for members to work, think, or unwind. Occasional talks and lectures bring its collection to life in the most intimate of settings.
PRIVATE DINING
Seating up to eight, this classic Club room offers a private dining experience with separate seating and service. Surrounded by historic silverware and heritage charm, it’s a favourite for special occasions and discreet entertaining.
MEMBERS' BAR
The Club’s social soul. Original spittoons, deep Chesterfields, a humidor, and a barman who knows your usual. From cigar evenings to off-the-record chats, it’s a sanctuary for conversation, connection, and classic comforts.
BOARDROOMS
These two richly appointed boardrooms are equipped for modern business with presentation tech and Wi-Fi, while displaying rare artefacts tied to South African history. A space to think, lead, and impress — all behind closed doors.
